A website redesign checklist for small businesses.

A redesign is a chance to fix what's costing you inquiries, and an easy way to lose what's already working. Run through this before you approve a design.

1. Decide what the site has to do

Name the one action you want a visitor to take: call, request a quote, book, buy. If you can't say it in a sentence, the design will blur it. Every page should lead toward that action or support it.

2. Audit what you already have

List the pages that bring visitors, rank in search or have links pointing to them. Those pages carry value you don't want to throw away. Note what works too: a page that already answers a common question clearly is worth keeping.

3. Protect your search visibility

  • If any page address changes, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one.
  • Keep useful page titles and descriptions, and improve weak ones.
  • Submit your new sitemap to Google after launch.

No one can promise rankings, but careful handling avoids losing visibility you've already earned.

4. Make the next step obvious

One clear primary action per page, contact details that are easy to find, and forms that ask only for what you really need. Every extra field is another reason to leave.

5. Check speed and mobile

Google's research found that the probability of a visitor bouncing increases 32% as page load time goes from one second to three. Test your pages on a real phone, on mobile data, not just on a fast office connection.

6. Show there's a real business behind the site

The Stanford Web Credibility guidelines recommend showing the real people and organization behind a site, making your contact information clear (phone, address, email) and keeping content current. Fix broken links and typos before launch, since they quietly cost trust.

7. Set up measurement before launch

Install analytics and conversion tracking first, so you can compare inquiries before and after the redesign instead of guessing.

Launch-day checklist: redirects tested, forms tested end to end, tracking verified, sitemap submitted, mobile pass done, contact details correct on every page.
