Guide · Choosing a partner

10 questions to ask before hiring a web design agency.

Whoever you hire, these questions separate a vendor who finishes a job from a partner who helps you grow.

1. Who will I work with directly?

A good answer: the people actually doing the work, without layers of account managers between you and them.

2. Can you show results, with specifics?

A good answer: real examples with before-and-after numbers and the work that produced them. Be cautious of vague or unverifiable claims.

3. Will my site be custom or built on a template?

A good answer: a clear explanation of the trade-offs, and how the choice affects speed, search visibility and your ability to grow.

4. Who owns the domain, hosting, ad accounts and content?

A good answer: you do. Your accounts should be in your name so you can always take them elsewhere.

5. How will you protect my search visibility during a redesign?

A good answer: a plan for redirects, preserved page titles and a post-launch check, plus honesty that no one can guarantee rankings.

6. What will it cost, and what is included?

A good answer: clear pricing levels or a clear scope. Nielsen Norman Group's research found that pricing is one of the first things business buyers look for, and that hiding it frustrates them.

7. How will we measure success?

A good answer: agreed measures before the work starts, such as inquiries, calls or sales, and regular plain-language reporting.

8. What happens after launch?

A good answer: ongoing improvement, support and a plan for the next stage, so a launch isn't the end of the relationship.

9. How do you handle mobile, speed and accessibility?

A good answer: designing for phones first, testing on real devices, and building so that everyone can use the site.

10. What do you need from me?

A good answer: a short, specific list: access to your analytics and accounts, your goals, and your time for key decisions.
